What is the Material of Billiard Balls?

how is pool played

Pool balls are made from a variety of materials. These include wood, plastic and phenolic resins. Each material comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Despite the many choices, phenolic pool balls are typically the most durable.

They are resistant to scratches and have a long life span. They tend to be more expensive, but it is well worth the additional cost. They are also well-known for their unique feature: their high density surface.

Phenolic Resin, a strong and long-lasting substance, has been used in many industries. It is made by combining formaldehyde and phenol. To make the ball, the mixture is compressed under extreme pressure. The material can withstand extreme temperatures and has a high bonding power. It is also more resistant against chipping due to its molecular structures. Because of this, pool balls made from phenolic resin are up to five- to six times more durable than polyester balls.

Also, plastic materials are non-flammable and durable. However, they have their downsides as well. For instance, they tend to lose their shine quicker than phenolic resin balls. You may also get burn marks on the table from using them.

In the 19th century, plastics were still in their infancy. Leo Baekeland an American chemist discovered a new chemical which could be molded into a plastic-like substance. Bakelite was the result of his research and was used for the manufacture billiards balls. This new material became the norm as a result of the growing popularity of billiards.

The material gained popularity in the United States during the 20th century. Wealthy people could buy it. Even though it was still very expensive, it offered more durability than wooden. In the 1920s, the material had replaced wood in the manufacture of billiard ball balls.

The majority of professional pool balls today are made from plastic or phenolic compounds. This material is far more durable than ivory and wood. It's also slightly more expensive, but it's a great investment for anyone who plays often.

A set of professional pool ball sets is a great way to learn the game. A pool table accessory kit includes extra balls and equipment that will ensure your game stays safe.

Another option is to purchase synthetic materials, such as acrylic or polyurethane. These materials are cheaper, but come with some disadvantages. They are not as shiny as phenolic balls, but they can lose their shine just as quickly. They are not as scratch-resistant than phenolic resin.

If you don't want to spend the money on phenolic resin balls you can still get a set with polyester balls. Polyester balls may be cheaper but they aren’t as durable. Some of them might even break. Be sure to only purchase polyester balls from trusted brands.
