The Americans had led the first phase matches by as many as four games, with Filler going up to 6-2.
Van Boening was the top 64-player seed. He had spent hours practicing his break shot in Qatar. This helped him breeze through his first four opponents, which he won by a combined score of 44-14. He beat Orcollo the first round and then defeated David Alcaide the second round.
