Brunswick produced the first billiard tables in Cincinnati for a successful Cincinnati meatpacker. Word of mouth quickly spread word about the tables and more were ordered. Brunswick began purchasing competitors in 1870s. They would soon dominate the billiards business worldwide. Brunswick had sales of $422 millions in 1960. Brunswick began to expand into other products in the early 1900s. These included refrigerators and toilet seats. Brunswick began making automobile tires in the early 1900s. In 1961, Brunswick acquired Mercury Marine, and began to supply camouflage nets to the military during the Gulf War.

John Moses Brunswick, from Switzerland, immigrated to America in the mid-19th Century. He was an apprentice in Philadelphia and New York City. He was soon elected to the Ohio legislature, and in 1865, he started the Cincinnati Carriage Making Company. Julius Balke, the Cincinnati-based owner of a billiards machine factory, later joined his ranks. Balke opened a St. Louis branch in 1854 and later he established another in Chicago.
Brunswick was also a military contractor. Products from the Brunswick company were used in two world Wars. Brunswick acquired Mercury Marine, an American company that makes boats and radomes to support Patriot missiles in 1961. Brunswick grew its product line in the 1900s to include toilet seat, refrigerators, phonographs, etc.
